Engineered for Extremes: Interlock Metal Roofing Takes on Antarctica with SPOT MODULE Project

Antarctica SPOT MODULE Project — McMurdo Station

When it comes to building in the harshest environments on Earth, every material choice matters. That’s why Interlock Metal Roofing was chosen as part of the SPOT MODULE Project in Antarctica—an initiative supporting the South Pole Overland Traverse (SPoT), a critical logistics mission resupplying the Amundsen–Scott South Pole Station.

The Challenge: Building for Antarctica

Antarctica presents extreme conditions—temperatures plummet well below freezing, and winds can reach speeds exceeding 100 mph. Structures must endure these elements while providing reliable shelter for crews undertaking the two-month, 1,000-mile SPoT journey across the ice. The NSF and the United States Antarctic Program (USAP) needed modular units that were:

  • Insulated and portable
  • Capable of withstanding severe cold and wind
  • Lightweight yet structurally robust

The Solution: Interlock Metal Roofing

After rigorous evaluation, Interlock Metal Roofing was chosen for both the roofing and siding of the SPOT MODULEs. Key factors influencing this decision included:

  • Exceptional performance in extreme temperatures
  • High wind resistance and structural reliability
  • Lightweight, corrosion-resistant aluminum construction

These attributes ensure the modules can be towed across glacial terrain without compromising integrity or safety
.

The Design: Modular Innovation by Yardstick Studio

Yardstick Studio Architecture was tasked with designing these Arctic-ready modules. Their approach combined innovation with practicality, resulting in structures that meet the rigorous demands of Antarctic expeditions. The collaboration between Yardstick Studio and Interlock Metal Roofing exemplifies how thoughtful design and superior materials can overcome environmental challenges.

At sunrise on the Antarctic Plateau, SPOT MODULE units outfitted with Interlock Metal Roofing are towed across the ice during the South Pole Overland Traverse—demonstrating resilience in one of Earth’s most unforgiving environments.

A Testament to Durability

Interlock’s involvement in the SPOT MODULE Project underscores its commitment to engineering roofing solutions that perform under the most demanding conditions. Whether facing the icy expanses of Antarctica or the varied climates of North America, Interlock Metal Roofing delivers durability, reliability, and peace of mind.
